About Outdoor Flood Lighting

A flood light is a type of directional light that is often used to illuminate large areas such as parking lots, stadiums, and playing fields. The light is typically housed in a large, weather-resistant housing that can be mounted on a pole or a flat surface.

Although flood lights offer a more directional light than standard bulbs, they are meant to cast a wider beam than a spotlight. This makes them ideal for illuminating large areas while providing enough targeted lighting.

After all, flood lights are often used as a security measure to deter intruders and increase visibility in dark areas.

Traditional flood lights are equipped with CFL or halogen bulbs, but the most popular type nowadays is the LED flood light. LED flood lights have many advantages over traditional halogen bulbs, so more and more business owners or property managers are opting for these types for their buildings.

Why use An OUTDOOR flood light over other options

Unlike outdoor fixtures with standard bulbs, flood light bulbs are designed to provide a much more focused beam of light. While standard bulbs beam their lights in every direction, a flood light is more narrow and targeted.

This makes them shine brighter than traditional bulbs with equal or higher lumen ratings.

They are similar to spotlights in that regard, however, their beam spreads tend to be much wider. Whereas spotlights offer to beam spreads up to 45 degrees, a flood light fixture offers beam spreads up to 120 degrees.

At ECO LED, our outdoor LED flood light fixtures are offered in a variety of wattage and beam spread options.

What is the advantage of an LED Flood Light?

LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, are becoming increasingly popular as a type of flood light. LED’s have a number of advantages over traditional incandescent bulbs, including:

  1. LEDs are more energy efficient. They use less electricity to produce the same amount of light as a halogen bulb. This can save you money on your energy bill and help reduce your carbon footprint.
  2. LEDs last longer. An LED flood light can last for up to 50,000 hours, while a halogen bulb will only last for about 2,000 hours. This means that you won’t have to replace your LED flood lights as often, saving you time and money in the long run.
  3. LEDs produce significantly less heat than halogen bulbs.

In addition, there is a great push to make facilities more energy efficient and “green.” By switching to LED floodlights, you can help your business or organization meet its sustainability goals and qualify for local rebates. Check with your utility provider to see what programs are available in your area.

Types of LED Flood Lights (by wattage)

The primary way of differentiating between LED flood light fixtures is by wattage. Outdoor LED flood lights range anywhere from 15 watts to ultra-high outputs of up to 1300 watts.

Here at ECO LED, we offer a range of options from 15 watts all the way up to 300 watts.

The lower-wattage products are characterized by their smaller size and mounting options. For example, our product offerings from 15-50 watts are available with a knuckle to mount as well as a trunnion mount. However, our higher-wattage products do not offer a knuckle mount option as they are too large or heavy for that type of mounting.

Small LED flood lights are ideal for lighting small signs, flag poles, accent lighting, or any other application where a compact light is needed.

Larger flood light fixtures with higher wattage are used for illuminating larger areas such as parking lots, stadiums, and sports fields. Higher wattage units are not only larger in stature but contain more luminaires which emit more light.

Mounting options available

Outdoor LED floodlights come in a variety of mounting options. Each option has its own set of use cases and applications.

The most common types of mounts for LED flood lights are:

-Knuckle mount

-Trunnion mount

-U mount (also called a yoke mount)

-Slip fitter mount

Knuckle Mounts

Knuckle mounts are a type of mount that attaches the light to a round or square pole. The light is attached to the pole using a knuckle, which is a joint that allows the light to be adjusted up or down. This type of mount is common for small lights, such as those used for walkways.

Trunnion Mounts

Trunnion Mounts is a bracket that is designed to be attached to a flat surface like a building siding or a wall. It is a 3-sided bracket that can be attached to the bottom of the fixture. The left and the right side is connected to the fixture while the bottom side is meant to be fixated on a flat surface.

Trunnion mounts are often used on larger fixtures that are too heavy for a knuckle mount.

U Mounts or Yoke Mount

The U Mount is a three-sided bracket that is mounted to the bottom of the fixture rather than wrapping around it like the trunnion option.  Like the trunnion mount, it is designed to be installed on flat surfaces.

Slip fitter mount

Slip fitter mounts are designed to be installed on square or round poles. They have a conical shape that allows it to “slip” over the top of the pole and then be secured in place with a set screw.

What makes LED Floodlights commercial grade?

Commercial-grade LED flood lights are designed to withstand the rigors of daily use in a variety of settings. From office buildings and parking lots to warehouses and factories, these tough lights can take a beating and keep on shining.

The main difference is in the construction. Commercial-grade LED flood lights are made with heavier-duty materials that can stand up to weather extremes and regular wear and tear. They also often have features like adjustable mounting brackets and are rated for outdoor use.

Our flood lights are all IP65 rated which means they can withstand exposure to water. There is no need to worry about these lights if they get wet or even rained on. Commercial flood lights also usually come with a longer warranty than their residential counterparts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below are some of the most common questions asked about our products and flood lights in general. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any additional questions.

1. How bright are your LED Outdoor Flood Lights?

The brightness of a light fixture is measured in lumens. Lumens measure the amount of light that is emitted from a source. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light. The amount of light emitted by a LED fixture is determined by the number of LEDs and the power of each LED. Our commercial-grade LED flood fixtures have a lumen output ranging from 1695 lumens on the low end to 35400 lumens on our largest 300-watt fixture.

2. What is the color temperature of your Outdoor Flood Lights?

ECO LED fixtures are available in three different configurations, 4000K, 5000K, and 5700K. each type has its own unique benefits and drawbacks. Our 5700-kelvin unit offer a cool white temperature that is ideal for large area where high levels of illumination are needed. The 5000K configuration is a more natural white light that is easy on the eyes and ideal for general lighting applications. Our 4000K units provide a warm white light that is perfect for accent lighting or creating a welcoming atmosphere.

3.Are ECO LED flood lights dimmable?

Our products have both dimming and non-dimming capabilities. The dimming feature is great for creating the perfect ambiance in any setting. It also can help to conserve energy by reducing the amount of light that is needed to adequately illuminate an area. There are three dimming functions available in our fixtures

Constant Current Dimming (1v-10v)

Constant current dimming is a type of analog dimming that is often used for LEDs. With constant current dimming, the current flowing through the LED is kept at a constant level, and the voltage is varied to control the brightness of the light. This approach has a number of advantages, including improved color stability and better power efficiency.

PWM Signal dimming

Pulse width modulation dimming (PWM) is a technique for reducing the average power delivered to an electrical load. This technique is used in LED lights, where it can be used to control the brightness of the light. It is also used in motor speed control and other applications where it is necessary to control the amount of power delivered to a load.

Variation of Resistance Unit Dimming

A variable resistance dimmer is a type of light dimmer that uses a variable resistor to control the amount of power flowing to a light. The variable resistor is usually a potentiometer, which allows the user to dial in the desired level of brightness.

4. What is the expected lifespan of your commercial LED floodlights?

Our LED fixtures are rated for 50,000 hours of use. This translates
